Eligibility: Residents, Fellows, and Interns

Residents, Fellows, and Interns Health Plan (RFI)

Residents, Fellows, and Interns at the University of Minnesota are required to enroll in either the Basic plan or Basic Plus plan for at least single coverage or provide documentation of other comparable health insurance to the Office of Student Health Benefits. If you have other health insurance, you must complete a waiver form (pdf) and provide a certificate of coverage from your health insurance provider. Approved waivers are valid for two years.

The health plans do not have a pre-existing condition clause, meaning you and your eligible dependents will have coverage for any medical condition as soon as your coverage becomes effective.

Note: Coverage for residents and fellows continuing residencies or fellowships will remain at the same level of benefits elected for the 2024-2025 plan year unless an enrollment/change form is submitted by June 15, 2025.
