Assess Your Insurance Needs

Student Health Benefit Plan

The Office of Student Health Benefit (OSHB) administers health, dental, and pharmacy benefits, along with enrollment for all eligible University of Minnesota (UMN) students, graduate assistants, residents, fellows and interns.

Assessing Your Needs

University requirement

Students who are registered for six or more credits per semester (three during the summer term) are required to have active health insurance while enrolled at the University of Minnesota. Whether you are coming to campus with an active health insurance plan or need to enroll in one, the Student Health Benefit Plan may be the best plan for you during your time at the University.

Health care needs

Do you need preventative, frequent, or continued health care services? The SHBP provides comprehensive and cost-effective coverage for your unique health care needs while on campus. An unexpected injury, illness, or medical emergency can happen anytime. Enrolling in the SHBP may provide you with quality and comprehensive coverage for accessing planned and unplanned health care visits at lower costs.

Assessing Your Coverage

Do you already have health insurance?

If you are coming to campus with an active health insurance plan, it is important to be aware that your current plan may have limitations when accessing care on campus or in the surrounding area.

Call your insurance plan’s member services line before arriving on campus to see which medical facilities and providers nearby are in-network with your current plan. Some common services you may need include:

  • Seeing a mental health professional
  • Seeing a primary care provider
  • Getting an eye exam
  • Picking up prescription medications

If you wish to remain on your current health insurance plan, you will need to complete the Health Coverage Declaration to waive (opt-out of) the SHBP.
