The Office of Student Health Benefits offers the Student Health Benefit Plan to eligible students at the University of Minnesota.
The University requires all degree-seeking students (enrolled for 6 or more credits that contribute towards the total count under the enrollment guidelines for being assessed mandatory Student Services Fee) to have health plan coverage. Students who meet this requirement will automatically be enrolled in the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan unless they waive the plan by providing verifiable proof of private health plan coverage during the class registration process. Spouse(s) or domestic partner(s) (same sex) and/or dependent(s) of students are only eligible to enroll in the plan if the student enrolls them during the open enrollment period (in the fall semester), or when the student first becomes eligible for the plan.
If a student can not show proof of health plan coverage, the student will be automatically enrolled in the the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan and the non-refundable semester fee will be added to the student’s University bill.
Non-degree seeking, certificate-seeking, distance learning, EMBA, PTMBA and Continuing Education students are not eligible to enroll in the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan. Please contact the Office of Student Health Benefits to determine exact eligibility status.
When you register for classes through web registration, you will be
instructed to enter the name of the company providing your health plan, health plan member ID, and telephone number. If you currently have your own health plan coverage and don't
want to purchase the University-sponsored plan, you must enter this
information.
If you do not have your own health plan coverage, you must purchase the
University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan. To do so, check the option "I wish to enroll". You will be enrolled in the
University-sponsored plan and the charges will be added to your
University fee statement.
To enroll dependents on the plan, the primary member must submit a Dependent Enrollment Add/Change Form. Eligible dependents include a spouse or same sex domestic partner and a child or children. Dependent enrollment is contingent upon the Office of Student Health Benefits verification of primary member enrollment
The Student Health Benefit Plan enrollment deadlines coincide with
the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities registration deadlines, set
by the Office of the Registrar for each semester and for summer
session.
For students with registration exceptions, please contact the
Office of Student Health Benefits at
(612) 624-0627 for instructions.
Please refer to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Class
Schedule or contact the
Office of Student Health Benefits at (612)
624-0627 or umshbo@umn.edu.
Students enrolled in the Student Health Benefit Plan will be mailed a health plan card from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota by the end of the sixth week of classes.
Cards are sent to the U.S. mail address on record with the University. Please make sure your address is up-to-date through One Stop: Go to Registration > Update Personal Information.
If you recently updated your address and think your card may have been sent to your old address, please email your name, student ID number, and “I have updated my U.S. Mail address in One Stop and would like a new card sent to me.” to umshbo@umn.edu.
The Office of Student Health Benefits must receive confirmation from you that your U.S. Mail address is correct in One Stop before a new card can be issued.
Before using your Student Health Benefit Plan coverage, please familiarize yourself with the information found under “Plan Details” (right).
If you are either on your own health plan, or your parents' plan, you will not be required
to purchase the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan.
To ensure that you will not be billed for the University-sponsored plan, provide
the following when you register for classes in-person or complete a
web registration: the name of the company providing your health plan; the
insurance company phone number; and your health plan member ID.
You must enter this information each semester when you register. The
deadline for updating this information each semester is the last day
of the second week of class (this date will be listed on the One Stop website).
After the last day of the second week of class, students who wish to request a waiver from the Student Health Benefit Plan must file a petition. To file a petition, please submit the following two documents to the Office of Student Health Benefits by mail or fax by the deadline listed on the Petition Form.
The Office of Student Health Benefits will contact you via university email with a decision regarding your petition within 2 weeks of filing.
Your insurance coverage must have been effective prior to the first day classes in order to qualify to waive the Student Health Benefit Plan. We suggest that you pay all charges and fees as billed by Students Accounts Receivable to avoid late fees that may accumulate during this process.
Students enrolled in the Student Health Benefit Plan during spring
semester will be automatically covered on the Plan through the
summer semester at no additional charge.
Degree-seeking students registered for 3 or more qualifying credits during
summer term who did not take classes spring semester will pay the
University's summer term Student Services Fee and will be
required to have health plan coverage. Students who meet this
requirement will automatically be enrolled in the Student Health
Benefit Plan unless they provide proof of private verifiable health plan coverage when registering for summer classes.
Once you graduate you’ll need health plan coverage. Many parent plans drop dependent coverage for students after graduation. The University of Minnesota has partnered with Blue Cross and Blue Shield to offer a guaranteed coverage option for an unlimited time period between graduation and the time you become eligible for employer-sponsored health plan. It’s called the University of Minnesota Student Conversion Plan, and it gives you your choice of five Blue Cross and Blue Shield individual plan options for guaranteed coverage without having to prove insurability. Costs are based on the deductible and network you choose.
To be eligible for the Student Conversion Plan after you graduate, you must be enrolled in the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan (SHBP) for the previous 6 months. If you are currently covered by a different health insurance plan, consider switching to the SHBP prior to your last semester. This can only be done at the beginning of fall semester during open enrollment, or within 60 days of an involunary loss of coverage. Students who remain on a parent’s plan or other insurance plan will not be able to take advantage of the Student Conversion Plan after graduation.
Enrollment for the Student Conversion Plan will open near the end of your SHBP coverage. An email will go out to all eligible students enrolled in the SHBP when Student Conversion Plan enrollment materials are posted to the web. Students must enroll within 60 days of termination of SHBP coverage. Student Conversion Plan coverage will be effective retro-active to the last day of SHBP coverage. A student may stay on the Student Conversion Plan indefinitely and can cancel any month.
Students Terminating SHBP Coverage January 18, 2010
To enroll in the University of Minnesota Student Conversion Plan, enrollment forms must be received by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota on or before March 19, 2010. Coverage will be effective retro-active to January 18, 2010.
